Fish for Tomorrow?

This year the wetlands community is focussed on the theme Fish for Tomorrow? to draw attention to the role that healthy wetlands and river systems play in maintaining healthy populations of marine and freshwater fish and other aquatic food species.

South Africa's No. 1 Estuary

In recognition of its status, the Knysna estuary will be the national focus of World Wetlands Day celebrations. Rated Number One in terms of conservation importance and as the estuary with the largest volume of seawater entering during neap and spring tides, Knysna has one the highest biodiversity levels of any estuary in South Africa and is more energy-productive per hectare than even wheat. However, poor land management in its catchment and development and settlement-related pollution in its immediate basin are slowly eroding its value and beauty.
